Dinosaur Drawing goes KALASATAMA!

In a 25-year process the peninsula of Kalasatama, a former industrial harbour in the heart of Helsinki, is re-developed. One of the many up-coming happenings in this area of unlimited potentials is a summer residence of 7 containers taken over by different groups and organisations. Exciting times are ahead!

Public School Helsinki will have the use of one of those and a whole host of events are already planned. On Helsinki Day {12.06. 2010} also up to two Drawing events will play out – different environments and different actions coming up!

More about that later, so check back on updates!

On the 27TH OF APRIL 2010 HELSINGIN SANOMAT published an article about Public School Helsinki. As it happened to be, we had the second all-night Drawing Marathon just starting off when the reporter & photographer visited, so some words were written also about this event.

SECOND DRAWING MARATHON at Ptarmigan • 23./24.04. 2010
a Public School Helsinki event

We decided to have the second all-night Drawing Marathon starting off some hours earlier, so the first participants arrived just after 6 P.M. 'Old hands' returning and new people showing up made for a nice mixture of about 30 people in a time span of approximately 12 hours.

Again we didn't really plan what would happen, and after some quick warm-ups {this time all in the name of dinosaurs and birds}, the narrative went literally all over the place. Some common subjects were there {Eyjafjallajökull's expanding ash cloud for one}, but this time the mixture of details was even more intricate — a whole scope of the curious, crude, precious & poetic.

There were too many stories to do them all justice here, but below some impressions can be found.

Thanks again to all who came and to Ptarmigan for letting us use their project space {with better paper we didn't even have to repaint the walls this time, heh}!

FIRST DRAWING MARATHON at Ptarmigan • 19./20.03. 2010
a Public School Helsinki event

{The Public School Helsinki exists since January 2010 and is one of at the moment 8 worldwide 'Everyman's Public Schools'. > check more about Public School Helsinki here.

from the TPSH web-page:
'THE PUBLIC SCHOOL is not accredited, it does not give out degrees, and it has no affiliation with the public school system. It is a framework that supports autodidactic activities, operating under the assumption that everything is in everything.'}

> Check more about the approximately once per month happening 'TPSH Drawing Events' here!

At our first ever 'Drawing Marathon' fifteen people drew all over 2 1/2 walls in Ptarmigan's project space from 10 P.M. to 7 A.M.

We tried lots of things, had some human-representation-themed warm-up exercises and after that everyone let loose. In the next 8 hours a detailed story developed including a Mexican mouse, a wererabbit, Pippi Longstocking, a class reunion, David Beckham, a striped deer, the Little Blue Submarine and, and, and...

Many thanks to all the participants and Ptarmigan!
